‘It would be nice to have the opportunity to work with other people’
Rik Mayall
Greetings Comedy Crowders,
In today’s inspiration section we’ve shared a classic interview with Rik Mayall in which he shares this thought about collaborating.
Some things have changed since 1984 (we’ll save the full list for a slow newsletter week), but the benefit of working with different creators on a variety of styles and formats remains.
The great thing is it’s so much easier to find talented comedians now and reach out to them than it was in Rik’s day. So what are you waiting for?
If the answer is you are waiting to read this week’s opportunities, then fair enough. Here they are:
COMMUNITY NEWS
We are delighted and excited that Top Talent Comedy Crowders Bec & Sam (aka BAM!Comedy) and Farrel Hegarty have been nominated for the ITV Entertainment bCreator of the Year Award 🤩.
The award is 60% judged and 40% public vote, so your vote will make a big difference! We’ll be giving them our support and it would be great to see fellow Comedy Crowders getting involved too.

Global Opportunities
Rogue Island Comedy Festival
The semi-annual Rogue Island Comedy Festival is Rhode Island’s only stand-up comedy festival, and performer submissions are currently open.
The Comedy Festival has two instalments per year – one in Fall and one in Spring. With a host of comedians performing across several venues, the festival is keen to put on a showcase of diverse and original comics, spanning voice, style and background. There is a charge to submit, and comedians who are accepted to perform will be paid for their show/s.
Inspiration
Rik Mayall on his Comedy Characters
Earlier this month the first Rik Mayall Comedy Festival was held in Worcestershire, UK, to celebrate the legacy of his genius comedy talent.
So we’ve dug deep into the archives to find a 1984 interview with Terry Wogan, in which Rik gives an insight into the inspiration for his comedy characters. It’s all an entertaining watch, but minute 4 onwards is where he talks about the sparks for his creations.
Newsletter over and out!
Carry on creating and we'll see you next week.
